Carpentry services in Cardiff

Nine things we do, all of them ourselves. Kitchen fitting and fitted wardrobes are the bulk of it, but a good half of our week is doors, second fix, flooring and the list of small jobs that never quite gets done.

Kitchen fitting in Cardiff

We fit kitchens from any supplier — Howdens, Wren, Magnet, DIY-shed flat pack or a bespoke run made up for you. The units are levelled and scribed to the wall, the worktops are cut, jointed and sealed on site, and the doors and drawers are set so the gaps are even all the way along rather than only at the ends.

Older Cardiff houses almost never give you a square room to work in. Victorian and Edwardian terraces across Roath, Canton and Grangetown tend to have bowed walls, sloping floors, a chimney breast in the middle of the best run and a back addition that is a different height again. That is exactly the sort of kitchen where a fitted job either looks superb or looks obviously bodged, and it is why we scribe and pack rather than push a unit up to a wall and hope.

We work alongside your electrician and plumber, or we can bring in trades we use regularly, so the sequence runs properly and the kitchen is not sat half-finished waiting for someone. If you want a kitchen fitter in Cardiff who will also handle the joinery around the units — end panels, boxing in the pipework, the awkward scribes into a bay or an alcove — that is the same person, on the same day rate.

How long does it take to fit a kitchen in Cardiff?

A typical straightforward kitchen is a three to five day job for the carpentry: strip out and prep on day one, units and worktops through the middle, then doors, drawers, plinths and trims at the end. Add time if the room needs plastering, rewiring or a wall taking out, or if the worktop is stone and has to be templated and made off site. We will give you a realistic day count with the quote rather than an optimistic one.

Fitted wardrobes in Cardiff

Fitted wardrobes give you far more usable storage than a freestanding unit, because they run right into the awkward corners a shop-bought wardrobe cannot reach. We build to the room: full height into the ceiling, around a chimney breast, into a loft slope, or across an entire wall with a run of doors.

The carcass work is done properly — solid framing fixed back to the structure, not a flat pack leaning on a skirting board — and the internals are set out around what you actually own. Hanging rails at the right heights for long and short, drawer banks, shoe shelves, a section for bedding at the top, and lighting if you want it.

We fit hinged, sliding and bi-fold doors, and we can spray or paint the fronts in a colour of your choice, or supply them ready-finished.

Can you build fitted wardrobes into a sloping loft ceiling?

Yes — loft conversions and older top-floor bedrooms are where fitted storage earns its money, because the low end of the slope is dead space otherwise. We usually run full-height doors under the highest part of the slope and put drawers, pull-out shelving or a simple hinged access panel into the low end. Everything is framed and fixed to the structure, so it does not move when the doors are used.

Media walls in Cardiff

A media wall turns the wall your television is stuck to into the finished feature of the room. We build the frame, board and skim-ready finish, recess the TV so it sits flush, run every cable and power point inside the structure, and set in the shelving, cupboards, lighting and electric fire.

The parts people get wrong are ventilation and access. A recessed TV needs air around it and a way to reach the back of it later, so we build in a proper service void and removable panels rather than sealing everything in and hoping nothing ever needs unplugging.

We can build it as a simple flush panel with a floating shelf, or as a full wall with an inset fire, alcoves either side, LED strip lighting and closed storage underneath. We work with your electrician for the fused spurs and the fire supply, or we can arrange that.

What does a media wall cost to build in Cardiff?

It depends almost entirely on size and what goes into it. A straightforward panelled wall with a recessed TV and a floating shelf is a very different job from a full-width build with an inset electric fire, lit alcoves, closed storage and a stone-effect finish. The carpentry is usually the smaller half of the cost once you add the fire, the electrics and the finishing. Tell us the wall size and what you want in it and we will price it properly rather than quoting a headline figure that changes later.

What’s included

  • TV recessed flush with a ventilated, accessible void
  • All cabling and sockets concealed inside the build
  • Electric fire openings built to the manufacturer clearances
  • LED strip lighting, floating shelves and closed storage
  • Left ready for a plasterer, or finished and decorated

Door fitting in Cardiff

Hanging a door well is a proper carpentry job and it shows immediately when it has not been. We fit the lining plumb and square, hang the door to an even gap all the way round, set the hinges flush so nothing catches, and fit the latch, lock and handles so they line up and close without being shouldered.

Old Cardiff houses rarely have a square opening, so a door bought to a standard size usually needs planing on more than one edge and the lining packing to suit. We size doors on site rather than forcing a stock door into an opening that does not want it.

We fit internal doors, external front and back doors, French doors, bi-folds, sliding and pocket doors, and certified fire doors with the correct intumescent strips, smoke seals and closers for HMO and rental compliance.

Can you fit fire doors for a rental property or HMO in Cardiff?

Yes. We fit certified FD30 fire doors with the intumescent strips, smoke seals, correct-gauge hinges and self-closers that the certification depends on — the door itself only performs if it is hung and sealed the way it was tested. That matters for HMO licensing across Cathays, Roath and the student streets in particular. Tell us what your licensing officer or fire risk assessment has asked for and we will fit to it.

What’s included

  • Internal, external, French, bi-fold, sliding and pocket doors
  • Linings, casings, architrave and thresholds
  • Fire doors fitted with the correct seals and closers
  • Locks, latches, hinges and handles fitted and aligned
  • Sticking, dropped and draughty doors eased and re-hung

Bespoke joinery in Cardiff

Bespoke joinery is anything that has to be made rather than bought: alcove cupboards either side of a chimney breast, a run of shelving that follows a wonky wall, a window seat with storage under it, panelling, a bar, a boot room, a bench, a desk built into a box room.

It is the work that suits Cardiff housing stock best, because so much of it has features a standard unit simply cannot sit against. Every piece is measured on site, made to those measurements, and scribed in so it looks built-in rather than pushed up against something.

We work in MDF for painted finishes, and in oak, pine, ply and hardwood where the timber itself is the finish. We can leave it primed and ready for your decorator or finish it ourselves.

What is the difference between carpentry and joinery?

Traditionally joinery is the making — cutting and jointing timber into a finished item like a door, a staircase or a fitted cupboard — and carpentry is the fixing of timber in place on site, from roof and floor structure through to skirting and architrave. In practice most jobs need both, which is why we do both: the alcove unit is joinery, getting it to sit dead level against a bowed Victorian wall is carpentry.

  • Window seats, benches, boot rooms and understairs storage

General carpentry services in Cardiff

First fix is the structural side: stud partitions, floor joists and decks, loft and roof timbers, door linings, noggins and the timber grounds everything else fixes to. Second fix is everything that goes on afterwards and is on show — skirting, architrave, window boards, staircases, spindles and handrails, loft hatches and ladders.

We take on single second-fix jobs — a house full of new skirting and architrave, a staircase re-spindled, a loft hatch enlarged and a ladder fitted — as readily as we work through a full renovation from stud walls to final trims.

If you are running a renovation yourself and need a carpenter for a defined stage, that is completely normal for us and we will fit around the other trades.

Do you take on small carpentry jobs, or only full projects?

Both. Plenty of our work is a half-day or a day — a door that will not shut, a set of shelves, a loft ladder, a run of skirting after a plasterer has been in, a squeaking floor. We would rather do a small job well and be the person you call next time than turn it away. Small jobs are usually easier to slot in at short notice, too.

What’s included

  • Stud partitions, noggins and structural timber work
  • Floor joists, decks and squeaking floor repairs
  • Skirting, architrave, window boards and dado
  • Staircases, spindles, handrails and newel posts
  • Loft hatches, loft ladders and loft boarding

Flooring fitted in Cardiff

Most flooring problems are subfloor problems. We check and correct the floor first — screeding or ply-lining where it is uneven, fixing loose boards, sorting the squeaks — because a floor laid over a bad base will move, gap and creak no matter how good the boards are.

We fit laminate, engineered wood, solid wood and click or glue-down LVT, with the correct underlay, expansion gaps and threshold strips. Doors are eased and re-hung to the new floor height rather than left dragging.

Edges are what make it look finished, so we scribe around chimney breasts, bay windows and pipework, and either refit the existing skirting or fit beading, whichever suits the room.

Can you lay flooring over old floorboards in a Victorian terrace?

Usually yes, but not straight over them. Original boards in Cardiff terraces are rarely flat, often cupped, and frequently loose over the joists. We normally screw the boards down, then ply-line over the top to give a flat, stable base before the new floor goes on. Skipping that step is the single most common reason a new floor starts creaking and gapping within a year.

What’s included

  • Laminate, engineered wood, solid wood and LVT
  • Subfloor levelled, ply-lined and squeaks fixed first
  • Correct underlay, expansion gaps and threshold strips
  • Scribed into bays, chimney breasts and pipe boxing
  • Doors eased and re-hung to the new floor height

Decking and garden carpentry in Cardiff

External carpentry has to be built for the weather it will actually get, which in South Wales means a lot of rain. We build decks on a properly supported, ventilated frame with the right fixings and a fall that sheds water, rather than laying boards on a frame sat flat on wet ground.

We build timber and composite decking, raised decks with balustrades and steps, fencing and gates, pergolas, planters, storage benches and garden room shells.

Everything structural is pressure-treated, cut ends are re-treated before they go in, and we use stainless or coated fixings so the frame is not held together by rust in five years.

Composite or timber decking — which is better?

Timber costs less up front, looks warmer and can be sanded and re-oiled, but it needs cleaning and treating every year or two and it will move and grey over time. Composite costs more to buy, needs almost nothing doing to it, and will not splinter or rot — but it gets hot in direct sun and cannot be refinished if it scratches. In a shaded, damp Cardiff garden that sees a lot of rain, composite tends to be the easier long-term choice. Either way the frame underneath does the real work.

What’s included

  • Timber and composite decking on ventilated frames
  • Raised decks, steps and balustrades
  • Close-board and panel fencing, posts and gates
  • Pergolas, planters and storage benches
  • Garden room and summerhouse shells

Handyman services in Cardiff

Most households have a running list: a door that sticks, a shelf that needs putting up properly, a cupboard hinge that has dropped, flat-pack that never got built, a curtain pole, a loose bannister, a cat flap, a fence panel down after a windy week.

We take the whole list in one visit rather than charging you a call-out for each item, which almost always works out cheaper and gets the lot cleared in a morning or a day.

Because the background is carpentry, the joinery-adjacent jobs get done to a carpenter standard rather than patched — but we are happy to pick up general repairs and odd jobs around them.

Do you charge by the hour or by the job for handyman work?

For a list of small jobs a half-day or full-day rate is usually the fairest and cheapest way to do it, because you are not paying a separate call-out for every item. For anything bigger, or where materials are involved, we quote a fixed price for the job so you know what it costs before we start. Either way you are told which it is before any work happens.

What’s included

  • Flat-pack furniture built and fixed to the wall safely
  • Shelves, curtain poles, blinds, mirrors and TV brackets
  • Sticking doors, dropped hinges and failed catches
  • Loose bannisters, spindles and squeaking stairs
  • Fence panels, gates, sheds and general repairs
